Baldwin County, located in Alabama, was established on December 21, 1809, a decade before Alabama became a state. It was previously part of the Mississippi Territory until 1817, when it became part of the separate Alabama Territory. Alabama gained statehood in 1819. As the population grew and other counties were formed, Baldwin County has undergone numerous border changes. It has also been invaded by armies during the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War.
The county seat was initially McIntosh Bluff on the Tombigbee River, but it was later transferred to Blakeley in 1820, then to Daphne in 1868. In 1900, an act of the Alabama legislature authorized the relocation of the county seat to Bay Minette, but Daphne resisted the move.
