Overview of Benton County

Benton County, located in the Northwest Arkansas region, is known for its rich culture, economy, and history. Since the rise of Walmart, which has its headquarters in Benton County, the area has transformed from a rural and agricultural community to a suburban and white-collar one. Named after Thomas Hart Benton, a U.S. Senator from Missouri who played a significant role in Arkansas statehood, the county was established as Arkansas’s 35th county on September 30, 1836. It encompasses thirteen incorporated municipalities, including the county seat, Bentonville, and the largest city, Rogers.

Benton County is situated on the gently rolling terrain of the Springfield Plateau, which is a part of the Ozark Mountains. It contains many protected areas,

including Logan Cave National Wildlife Refuge, Pea Ridge National Military Park, and Devil’s Eyebrow Natural Area. Additionally, parts of the Ozark

National Forest, Hobbs State Park – Conservation Area, and two state wildlife management areas are within its boundaries. Beaver Lake, a reservoir of the

White River, runs through the eastern part of Benton County, providing a scenic view. The county also boasts several historic sites, such as log cabins,

one-room schoolhouses, community centers, and museums that showcase its rich history and culture.

Benton County’s creation dates back to September 30, 1836, when it was formed from Washington County by the 1st Arkansas General Assembly. Though early

settlements were established at Maysville and Cross Hollow, the centrally located Bentonville emerged as the county seat, replacing the former seats.

Today, Benton County is a thriving community with a rich history and culture that attract visitors from all over.
