Overview of Bibb County

Cahawba County was founded on February 7, 1818, and named after the Cahawba River, which was later called the Cahaba River. The county’s name was derived from the Choctaw language word, which means “water above.” However, on December 4, 1820, it was renamed as Bibb County.

During the aftermath of the American Civil War, the state legislature passed laws that made it difficult for Freedmen to participate in the political process by raising barriers to voter registration. As a result, many residents resisted the objectives of Union occupation during and after Reconstruction, as they aimed

to reinstate the social and political norms of the Antebellum era. Bibb, Dallas, and Pickens counties had the third-highest number of lynchings in the state during this transitional period.

On June 18, 1919, Jim McMillan was lynched by a White mob, and the incidence was not an isolated one. It was indicative of the racial tensions that existed in the county and the broader region during this time.
