Calaveras County Jail

Calaveras County, situated in the state of California, was established in 1850 during the time of the state’s incorporation into the Union. Initially covering a larger area, portions of its territory were later reassigned to other counties. The county boasts a diverse geography with scenic landmarks, hilly terrain, and valleys. It is also known for its welcoming communities, as well as for its agriculture management and construction engineering businesses. Calaveras County attracts tourists from all over the country with its numerous caverns, including Mercer Caverns, California Cavern, and Moaning Cavern. The county is also home to the largest of the Calaveras wineries: Ironstone Vineyards, mountain sports recreation, and the performing arts.

Gold prospecting in Calaveras County began in late 1848 when a camp was established by Henry Angel. Angel may have initially come to California as a soldier, having served under Colonel Frémont during the Mexican War. After the war, he heard of the incredible gold finds in the region while in Monterey. Angel joined the Carson-Robinson prospecting party and set out for the mines. The group split up after reaching what would become known as Angels Creek. Henry Angel tried his hand at placer mining but eventually opened a trading post. By the end of the year, over one hundred tents dotted the creek, and the settlement became known as Angels Trading Post, later shortened to Angels Camp.
